Evolution of research on recalcitrant seeds Scientia Agricola

Some comments about seeds that show sensitivity to desiccation and short viability period, called recalcitrants, were made. Further studies showed that there was a gradient of sensitivity to desiccation and an intermediate class was proposed. The research demonstrated different factors related to desiccation tolerance such as ABA, proteins and sugars. It was analyzed the research of recalcitrant seeds in Brazil, that started around 1950 and nowadays the major aspects studied are recalcitrant seeds identification, seed low temperature and drying tolerance, storage capacity under different rooms and packages, chemical composition and viability during storage, fungicide treatment efficiency on seed conservation.

Propagación sexual y tolerancia a la desecación en nanche (Byrsonima crassifolia L.) Kunth. Colegio de Postgraduados

El nanche es una especie forestal frutícola de amplio espectro utilitario, pero la germinación de sus semillas es compleja; por ello, el objetivo de la investigación fue conocer la dinámica germinativa de las semillas de clima cálido húmedo y clima semicálico, en el banco del suelo y en condiciones de invernadero; así como clasificarlas fisiológicamente, y proponer alternativas adecuadas para conservar este recurso fitogenético. Se encontró que las semillas de clima cálido húmedo forman un banco de tipo transitorio, en tanto que, para las de clima semicálido fue persistente de corto plazo. Por otro lado, en invernadero se observó que la humedad del suelo no representa inconveniente para la germinación de las semillas de ambos climas, si no que esto depende...

ABSTRACT: Macauba palm stands out for having favorable features to biodiesel production such as the high oil content of its fruit. Considering the great potential of the species and their applicability in the renewable energy field, it becomes indispensable to establish the right conditions for storing the seeds for propagation purpose. Temporary storage of jussara palm seeds: effects of time, temperature and pulp on germination and vigor Horticultura Brasileira

Seeds of jussara palm (Euterpe edulis Mart.) are recalcitrant, presenting low longevity, high sensitivity to dehydration and to low temperatures of storage. Temperature conditions for temporary preservation of those seeds, with and without pulp, were studied. Mature fruits were harvested from 24 plants belonging to the palm collection of the Instituto Agronômico (IAC) located at Ubatuba, São Paulo State, Brazil, and taken in moisture-proof containers to the Universidade Estadual de São Paulo, in Botucatu, São Paulo State. Half of the fruits were shelled and the seeds stored, with and without pulp, in sealed plastic bags (20 µm thick) maintained in chambers with temperatures of 5; 10; 15 and 20-30ºC.
